I'm not terribly interested in artistic pursuits that are easy. I thrive on challenge, ensemble, and true collaboration. So I created the neighborhood 24 hour play festival. I have been a part of similar events with Chalkboard Theatre Project, to whom I owe many thanks, and was struck by something very specific about this environment- it feels like home. The one where you meet your friends in the cul de sac at the end of the street and play capture the flag, manhunt, jump rope, house, or sometimes put on a play.
After Last Call takes that concept and runs with it. You can't swing a dead cat in South Philly without hitting an artist's house. Four of those artists have generously opened their doors to our teams for this event. At hour one, Residents are split into four teams and given a South Philly home to call their own for the duration of After Last Call. At hour twenty-four, they reconvene at The Pharmacy (in the heart of Newbold), to show the neighborhood what they made. The neighborhood 24 hour play festival cultivates the artistic home and collaboration grows out of it. We invite artists in, and they become residents in this experience.
However, After Last Call does not only serve artists. It also serves a cause that our neighborhood and community is passionate about. 100% of our profits will be donated to Rainbow Railroad, an organization that exists to help queer people in areas where they are an open target for violence. They have most recently gained recognition for their work in Chechnya, where "gay concentration camps" have sprung up.
